In today’s fast-changing world, it’s easy to feel like the decisions that shape our lives are made far away — in parliaments, offices, or international meetings. But democracy is not just about voting once every few years. It’s about how we live every day. And that’s where active citizenship comes in.

So, what does it mean to be an active citizen — especially as a young person?

Active Citizenship: More Than a Status

Being a citizen isn’t just a legal identity or a passport. It’s a responsibility — and more importantly, an opportunity. Active citizenship means being informed, engaged, and involved in your community and society. It means realizing that you have a voice — and that your voice matters.

Whether you're 16 or 26, you don’t have to wait for permission to make a difference. Democracy needs people who participate — and that includes you.

What Does Active Citizenship Look Like in Real Life?

Here are some everyday ways young people can become active citizens:

You ask questions.

Active citizens are curious and critical thinkers. They look at their surroundings and ask:

  • Why is this happening?

  • Who is being left out?

  • What can we do to make things better?

This mindset is the first step toward change.

You participate.

You don’t need to run for office to get involved. Joining a youth group, volunteering, attending a town hall, or even starting a conversation online — these are all forms of participation. Small steps lead to big shifts.

You take responsibility.

Active citizens don’t wait for others to fix things. Whether it’s organizing a cleanup in your neighborhood, standing up against discrimination, or spreading awareness about mental health — you become part of the solution.

You connect with others.

Citizenship thrives on collaboration. Listening, respecting diverse perspectives, and working with others helps build strong, peaceful, and inclusive communities. Together, we can achieve more.

Why Does This Matter for You(th)?

Because you are already shaping the world — with your ideas, your energy, and your courage.

When you get involved, you:

  • Strengthen democracy

  • Promote peace and inclusion

  • Defend human rights and justice

  • Inspire others to act

In the Youth For Peace project, we believe that peace is not just the absence of conflict — it’s the presence of fairness, equality, and participation. And that can’t exist without active citizens like you.

Active citizenship doesn’t mean doing everything. It simply means doing something — with intention, with awareness, and with hope. Your actions, no matter how small they seem, are part of a bigger picture.

So stay curious. Stay engaged.Speak up. Show up.Because peace and democracy don’t just need leaders — they need you.
