How Can Young People Participate in Democracy?

Democracy needs active citizens — and that includes young people like you. You don’t have to wait until you’re older or become a politician to make a difference.

Here are 5 simple ways to participate in democracy — starting today:

1. Stay informed.

Knowing what’s happening around you is the first step. Follow reliable news sources, understand your rights, and learn how decisions are made at local, national, and EU levels.

2. Speak up.

Use your voice — online or offline. Whether it’s posting on social media, joining discussions, or writing to decision-makers, your opinion counts.

3. Join a youth organization or local initiative.

Many communities have youth groups working on social change, climate action, mental health, or inclusion. Find your cause and get involved.

4. Vote (when you can).

Voting is one of the most powerful tools in a democracy. If you’re old enough, vote in local, national, and EU elections. If not yet — learn how the system works so you’re ready.

5. Practice everyday democracy.

Respect others, listen to different views, support fairness, and stand up against injustice. These small acts are the heart of a democratic mindset.

Democracy is not just a system — it’s something we build together. Step by step. Voice by voice. Action by action.

The project is co-funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the authors only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can by held responsible for them.
